Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts


……the Center was recognized for its work in advancing the synergy of arts and education through effective partnerships with schools, and won the prestigious Dominion ArtStar – Rising Star Award 2014 for its Student Matinees & Artists in Schools Program.

..…the Center was among only two arts organizations throughout Virginia which was presented with this honor.

…..over 50,000 people visit the Center each year. Approximately 12,000 of these visitors are youth under the age of 18.

…..approximately 725 artists participate each year at the Center.

…..annually, the Center hosts 30 professional performances, 6 gallery exhibits including 2 student art exhibits, 2 free concerts and 1 hit movie in partnership with Suffolk Tourism.

….and collaborates with many partners to bring relevant programs to our community – which were free and open to the public.

…..the Center offers over 125 classes annually and 2 summer camps in partnership with Young Audiences of VA.

…..the Center hosts field trips for over 5,000 students to see a minimum of 8 student matinees keyed directly into their SOL’s.

…..the Center takes about 4 visiting artists to the schools and community venues through the “Artists in Schools” program.

…..the Center donates back to the community through scholarships, grants for use of the building and absorbs costs to offer free or discounted programming.

…..the Center is housed in a historic landmark – 1922 building.

…..the Center has a $1.2 million budget; over 40% of income is from private donations.


…..the Center provides a platform for local students and school orchestras to perform before professional shows.

…..the Center offers quality art exhibits for student field trips and Student Art Exhibits.

…..the Center provides kids visual arts classes, theater classes, private music lessons and a variety of dance classes.

…..students who participate in the arts outperform their peers on virtually every measure.

…..increased enrollment in arts courses are positively correlated with higher SAT verbal and math scores.

…..arts education lowers dropout rates and reduces delinquency.

…..arts venues attract business because they enhance a community’s quality of life and help to attract a young, educated workforce.

…..the Center is not a part of the City of Suffolk, but is an independent 501(c)3 not for profit organization which promotes:

  • Contributes to the City’s tax base
  • Promotes citizen engagement
  • Enhances the quality of life for all in our community.

That thanks to the generous support of many through memberships, out-right gifts, grants, sponsorships, and funds raised through special events, the Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts has evolved into an arts destination in Hampton Roads!
